Photographer Robert Wilson has returned many times to Afghanistan for his personal project, Helmand Returns. He was approached earlier this year by SSAFA, the UK’s oldest national Armed Forces charity, to produce a campaign, Left Behind for PHA Media, that focused on family members of those who had lost loved ones in the Afghanistan conflict.
Family members were photographed by Robert doing activities or hobbies they used to enjoy with their lost family member: walking a dog, playing a game. Robert pulled images from his archives that fit the scene and then carefully constructed the photos and the final images to make it look as though the subjects were there in Afghanistan.
“It represents the fact that whatever they do they will always be reminded of their loved ones and a part of them will always see Afghanistan,” added Robert.
